Updates on what's happening in the basketball community right now. Loyalist Summer Basketball Camps, Lancer's Elite Development Workouts, and more!
What's up 613? The off-season is upon us. As the saying goes, "Great teams are made September through April, but great players are made April through September!" Hopefully most of you are spending time working on your game for the upcoming season. The competition is certainly adding something to their basketball toolbox - what about you? Are you adding range to your jumper? Perfecting your handles? Working on your fitness? There is always something you can be improving. Basketball never stops; neither should you.
This past week at Loyalist College we ran week one of our summer basketball camp for kids of ages 8 - 12. Our coaching staff included current Lancers players and coaches. Our second week begins this Monday July 10th and goes to Friday the 14th for ages 12 - 15. I am looking forward to helping another group of future hoop stars improve their game. |
Additional to the youth basketball camps, Lancers Head Coach, Patrick Kabeya, and I are half way through our 'Elite Development Camp' which runs at Loyalist every Thursday. This Thursday's session was very successful; the boys really got after it. With only 3 sessions remaining, we have really tried to challenge the group. Our focus has been on ball handling, shooting, fitness, and competitiveness so far. However, we have plenty more to throw at them before we finish. Getting these young athletes familiar with how hard they need to work should go a long way to helping develop basketball in the area.
Although the last workout will be on July 27th, players that want to continue to work on their game should rest assured knowing that Six One Three will be hosting their own elite development camp at the end of August. Quinte Secondary School has been booked for the week of August 21st-25th. The workouts will be open to athletes that will be going into grades 9 through 12 as of September. Registration will open up next week.
Lastly, I'll end with a great video on vertical jump exercises from one of my favourite YouTube channels, Elite Guard Training. Thanks for reading, and remember to get at me on Twitter with any questions or comments @CoachHughUp
