Whether it was TSN/NBA Analyst and Six One Three's favourite commentator Jack Armstrong coming to town, the Lancers Elite Camp coming to it's conclusion, or getting to watch a handful of basketball documentaries, the past couple of weeks were a blast for this hoop head.
| JACK WAS BACK in the 613! This time he took his talents to Loyalist College to work with a group of 20 young male athletes from Belleville, Napanee, and Prince Edward County. The County Clippers, along with the help of United Front Entertainment, were able to facilitate a very unique basketball experience for our local talent. On Thursday July 27th, Coach Jack along with Coach Patrick Kabeya worked with these kids on a range of hoops topics. We were fortunate to be a part of this memorable event and to learn from such a great person and basketball mind. The advice he shared with us extended beyond the basketball court to the game of life itself. |
At the beginning of summer, a group of basketball enthusiasts set out to improve their skills and challenged themselves to put in extra work on their game. Over a six week period these players were pushed to try new moves, practice harder, play faster, and compete at a higher intensity than they were accustomed to. The goal of this program was to help the up and coming generation of basketball players to understand what it takes to play at the post secondary level. Their commitment and desire to get better was evident to us as coaches by the way they absorbed information and accepted coaching. We were happy to work with such a great group of kids, as well as eager to watch them play in their upcoming seasons. Coach Kabeya and I look forward to working with these guys again soon. |
Despite going away to the cottage in Sault Ste. Marie, for a week I wasn't able to shake my basketball addiction. One of the neighbours has a hoop in their driveway which they let me use to get some shots up, and I spent some time each morning reading up on the latest news in hoops. However, one of my favourite things was watching some basketball documentaries I had not heard of before. I began with the Bobby Knight story 'Perfect in 76', followed by 'the Offseason: Kevin Durant', 'Center Court with Coach K', 'Ben Simmons: One & Done', 'Muse: Kobe Bryant', and concluding with 'Kareem: Minority of One'. These films focused on great coaches, great players, and perhaps the next star in the making. Although all of the stories had aspects I enjoyed a couple really stood out. The Kareem story was my favourite as it educated me on just how amazing his life outside of basketball really was and what a unique person he is. The Kevin Durant documentary gave me a better understanding what life is like for today's NBA superstars in terms of their training regiments, their social life, as well as the endorsement/ sponsorship responsibilities they are obligated to. Hearing from some of basketball's greats certainly provided some extra fuel for my upcoming seasons.
With only one month remaining of summer break it's time to start planning for the upcoming basketball season. Whether it be the Bay of Quinte high school basketball season, the OBA/Rep season, or OCAA men's basketball season, a lot of preparations must be made to ensure we put ourselves in position to be successful as teams. Our Loyalist Men's Basketball program is hosting our final recruitment camp of the summer this weekend, August 12th, and 13th, during which we will host scrimmages open for local fans to come watch. Additionall,y Six One Three will be hosting a training camp August 21st - 25th at Quinte Secondary School in Belleville for males entering grades 9 through 12.
